Nya Serano is an abstract landscape painter based in Los Angeles, CA. Her work explores the complexities of identity, drawing from her personal experiences with mental health while investigating themes of rest, nature, and self-discovery as grounding and healing mechanisms. Drawing from her imagination and photo references of nature scenes, Nya uses drawing as the foundation for her paintings. She indexes natural colors found in wildlife as the palette.
She spent the summer of 2023 in Mexico and was heavily inspired by the exuberant landscapes and temperatures. While the palette is inspired by nature, it also heavily relies on the intensity of color. She juxtaposes the balance between the natural rhythms of life, the elements of distortion, and the nuance of color. Landscape forms the foundation for figures posing in forms of physical activity, finding ways to connect to the earth. The figures depicted are in resting nondescript meditative states amidst imaginary spaces. The psychological process of translating drawings and works on paper to the porous canvas surfaces that emulate the absorbency of the paper allows Nya to embrace distortion as an active form of expression and experience.
